Some knowledge of how cockatiels live in their natural habitat of Australia should help us to understand cockatiels kept in captivity under different geographical and climatic conditions. However, most cockatiels today come from breeding stocks of birds which have been used to a captive, domestic environment for many years. Therefore we do not have to provide a reproduction in miniature of Australian conditions for our pet to feel well and to breed. We do, however, have to keep the cockatiel's native environment in mind.
Cockatiels are normally quite peaceful birds, but there may be arguments about partners and good nesting spots. Cockatiels mix well with many other small avian species such as canaries, budgerigars, finches and other small parrots, but they should be separated from larger psittacine birds, which may attack them.

This book discusses individual species of lovebirds, their general care and feeding requirements and what a responsible owner can expect in terms of taming and breeding his animals. The author explains that the reader should have some bird-keeping experience as lovebirds are not ideal birds for beginners. The various species themselves differ in their dietary requirements, their attitude towards humans and the ease with which they breed. Since peach-faced Lovebirds, Masked Lovebirds and Fischer's Lovebirds are the best species for the new lovebird owner, the book is geared towards their care. The author adds "Above all, we must always remember that we keep birds for their sakes and not ours and that all the pleasure we derive is the by-product of such care. We ensure our success as avian fanciers by putting the birds' welfare first at all times.
Blurb from inside cover:
Some of the birds found in the family of true finches, Fringillidae, are among the most popular of all cage and aviary birds. This is the family to which the common canary belongs and is primarily a seed eater. Most of the finches also feed on insects, fruit and vegetable matter to varying degrees. All require grit for digestive purposes and must have a constant supply of water for drinking and bathing. Finches should also have some form of lime-containing material, such as cuttlebone or baked and finely ground egg shell, available to them at all times to help them produce good, hard-shelled eggs.
The most colourful and interesting of all small seed-eating cage birds are found in the family Estrildidae, which includes 107 true species inhabiting Africa, Asia and Australasia. They are closely related to the true finches but differ in nesting habits; most of them build globular nests with side entrances that are entered by means of a spout. Additionally, some have a 'cock's nest' added to the top of the structure in which the male sleeps alone. In captivity many of them accept partly-open boxes or other receptacles in which to construct their nests. Some are quite easily bred.

The Red Fox is one of the largest wild carnivores in Britain, and reactions to it range from fear and hatred of an efficient killer to admiration for a beautiful, resourceful survivor. In this book, Dr Doreen King invites us to take a look at its eating habits, family life, and the advantages and disadvantages of living alongside humans. She tells us of its place in folklore and its long history as hunter and hunted, explaining its movement form the countryside to the town, so that now it can even be found scavenging on rubbish tips in city centres. She also advises how we can protect our livestock form the suburban fox and when and how we can help a fox that seems to be in trouble - and, most importantly of all, when we should leave it alone!
Doreen King won the first British Technology Group Prize for Research in 1984 and is a member of the Institute of Environmental Science and a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
